Panic!
Despair.
After a year and a half of various highly regarded phonics programs, James had
barely made any progress toward learning to read: he was still struggling to sound
out basic C-V-C words like “C-A-T” consistently. So of course I scoured the internet
for whatever relevant information I could find. Mixing up “b” and “d,” “p” and “q,”
and reversing words? Classic sign of dyslexia. Turning lots of somersaults and
spinning like a dervish? His vestibular system is out of whack. Google is a double-
edged sword, however: lots of information – a tidal wave of it – but it’s hard to
pinpoint the problem when there are a host of “symptoms,” and harder still to have
some understanding but no solution. What to do?
I learned of the Pearl Center from a friend, so we had James tested and began
coming twice a week for Search and Teach during the winter and spring of 2008. At
last, he began to make progress.
Relief!
Cautious optimism.
The following school year, in addition to therapy, we enrolled him in the language
arts and math classes that were offered – fortunately, with James’ wonderful
therapist as the teacher. He thrived in that small classroom with an empathetic (but
firm) teacher, an ordered and predictable schedule, and just a handful of kids who
had the same kinds of struggles as he. In the three years since, he has made quantum
leaps both academically and socially.
Joy!
Anticipation.
What fun it is to see your child blossom; to see his delightful personality emerging
from the shadows of failure, fear and inadequacy! What a pleasure to see him read
for pleasure, try new things, take risks, and find a niche where he excels! It is no
exaggeration for me to assert that the Pearl Center’s therapists and techniques have
made all the difference between success and failure not just academically, but in my
son’s life as a whole. I am profoundly grateful. They are my heroes.
